Teen Age Republicans
(TARs)
What are Teen Age Republicans (TARs)?Teen Age Republicans (TARs) are young people from across our state getting involved in the political process. Over the years the TARs organization has given thousands of young people the opportunity to have fun, make a difference, and become better leaders.
Why should I join TARs?
You should get involved with TARs if you want to:
-- learn about politics or government,
-- make a difference in your state and your community,
-- meet young people from across the state, and
-- spend time with Republican elected officials like John Thune and Mike Rounds.
What do TARs do?
TARs help out with Republican events (like parades, county fairs, and rallies), participate in community service projects, and learn from community leaders. TARs also help out at the statewide level with Republican events and activities and are especially active during election years as they help with campaigns.
Is there a club in my area?
TARs are located in more than three dozen communities and there are active TAR clubs in a number of those communities. For a list of active TAR clubs, click here.
What are the major TAR events?
-- TAR Leadership Camp – In July TARs hold their weeklong leadership camp in the Black Hills. TARs enjoy attractions (Mt. Rushmore, the Black Hills Playhouse, the Rushmore Waterslides), participate in educational sessions, and spend time talking to and learning from statewide leaders.
-- TARs in Action – Each September this weekend event in Sioux Falls focuses on community service and how to make a difference at the local level. The recipient of the George S. Mickelson Community Service Award is also honored during TARs in Action.
-- Teen Mock Legislature – In March the TARs gather in Pierre at the State Capitol for a two-day mock legislative session and leadership retreat. TARs learn about the legislative process and draft and debate bills on the floor of the House of Representatives.
-- Other Events – TARs also participate in events like the state Inaugural ceremonies, the State Fair, and as pages to the National and State Republican Conventions.
How old are TARs?
Young people of middle-school and high-school age (12-18 years old) are eligible to be Teen Age Republicans. In some cases students younger than 12 years old can be involved with the activities of their local club. There are also opportunities for adults to serve as club advisors or as chaperones at TAR events.
